âSure?â I ask both Evan and Keshia who sit on my bed. Theyâre both wearing cute clothes, looking fabulous. Theyâre both just a little older than me, but you couldnât tell if you didnât know. And no, both donât use botox or plastic surgery. They just age graciously and gorgeously.
Me?
I never really bounced back after the IVF treatments and the hormones that made me gain weight like crazy. But I donât have a personal trainer and a chef, while Keshia and Evan do. Donât get me wrong â I can totally join their personal training session, but I fucking hate working out. And cooking was my moment of sanity with a newborn. When Kyle got home after work, Iâd hand him the baby and head straight to the kitchen.
Some people like to take a bath, or a nap, or just sit in a chair somewhere in complete silence. I liked to chop up ingredients.
Anyway, Iâm looking in a mirror, wearing a mini skirt and a really tight top without a back. Evan taped in my boobs and now theyâre suddenly almost touching my chin, and I remember what it feels like to be twenty again. The question is if this is an appropriate outfit for a mother to go out in.
âQuit whining, make one of those messy buns, put these earrings in and then weâre going,â Keshia says. She is looking fabulous in jeans and some kind of top with all kinds of straps. Her cornrows are loose, and sheâs wearing a matching headband.
Evan is wearing a dress thatâs so short it should be illegal, but she can definitely have it. Her hair is braided in one of her signature intricate braids and there are little silver trinkets and feathers in her hair, making her look very Boho-chic.
Weâre going to a cocktail bar tonight. Somewhere I havenât been in forever. But we decided we were going to do something else than sit at home and drink wine. Now, going out for Keshia and Evan means that weâll have security joining us, but I secretly donât mind. The idea that thereâs someone out there watching us is actually making me feel safe.
âChop chop, you look amazing. Now itâs time to go show Los Angeles just how fabulous the three of us can still be,â Keshia says, clapping her hands.
Sheâs right. Iâm slowing everyone down because part of me is a little nervous. Iâm in my forties, I no longer party like Iâm twenty.
But Iâm not going to let fear hold me back. Thereâs plenty of fun for me to have left. So I straighten my shoulders, look my girls in the eyes and nod. Time to go.
âI feel so old,â I whisper when I look at the drinks menu. I have no clue what most of these drinks are, and this is the kind of bar that expects you to just know. But I donât, because Iâm a tequila champion.
Evan rips the menu from my hands and puts it back in its holder.
